Meg listens to Optometrists concerns

Sunday, November 6, 2005

Heeley MP Meg Munn met local opticians to hear their concerns over the proposed changes to NHS Optometrist services in the recently published Health Bill. The opticians outlined their disquiet about the proposal to transfer budgets to Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), thinking this would put a ‘cap’ on funding for optical eye tests and treatments.

However they welcomed some of the proposals, specifically in the area of cataract treatment. Furthermore they expressed a desire to take on more professional responsibility for eye care from General Practitioners, with a budget provided accordingly. They believe that in the long term it would reduce the need for expensive treatment because they would be able to spot problems at an earlier stage; then proscribe and refer treatment quicker.

Meg said she would write to the minister responsible in the Department of Health on their behalf outlining their concerns and proposals.
