‘Active Sheffield’ Campaign Springs into Action

Friday, December 16, 2005

Sheffield MP’s Meg Munn and Clive Betts, along with Council leader Jan Wilson, are urging people to be more physically active in 2006. This is part of an activity campaign promoted by Active Sheffield - a partnership of Sheffield City Council, the NHS and Sheffield Hallam University.

The campaign aims to show that being physically active is not just about joining a gym. Normal everyday activities, such as walking the dog, housework, or taking the stairs instead of the lift, can contribute to people’s health and well being. It also helps reduce levels of coronary heart disease, obesity and diabetes in the city.

Sheffield MP for Heeley, Meg Munn, said:

“I am pleased to add my support to the campaign, and its aim of promoting exercise and healthy living in the city. People do have busy lives and exercise is not always a priority, but walking to work or school instead of taking the car can make all the difference. I enjoy playing sports such as football and tennis, as well as going to the gym. I hope to take part in some of the activities that the campaign will be promoting in the coming year.

Paul Billington, of Active Sheffield, said:

“Being more physically active doesn’t have to be about making major sacrifices and trying to fit even more into an already hectic lifestyle. Simple changes can have a positive effect on people’s health, and you don’t have to be an athlete to do that little bit more. The aim is to be active for 20 to 30 minutes on as many days as possible - and everything from a brisk walk through to swimming or sport will count”

A website has been developed to provide comprehensive information on a variety of fun activities happening around the city, and tips on how people can be more physically active. There’s something for everyone, as many of these activities are low cost or free, and require no specialist equipment or training. Visitors to the site can also register to be sent personalised details of events that are happening in their community that may appeal to them.

To celebrate the launch Active Sheffield are giving away a year’s free membership for the Vital Spa and Gym at the new four star Macdonald St. Paul’s Hotel Sheffield. All you have to do to enter is visit www.thepeoplesmovement.co.uk, stating your details and giving your New Year’s physical activity resolution.
