Sheffield Council - a Gay Friendly Employer

Tuesday, January 17, 2006

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn today congratulated Sheffield City Council on being named the 5th most ‘gay friendly’ employer in the country. The figures come from Stonewall, a gay activist group that manages the ‘Workplace Equality Index’, a measure of how an organisation treats gay staff.

Meg said

‘I am delighted that my home city has been placed high on this list. Society is changing, this recognition for the city, coupled with the successful introduction of Civil Partnerships, shows Sheffield has taken a leading role in recognising equality and diversity amongst its people.’

The index ranks employers according to a range of 20 criteria including effective engagement with lesbian and gay staff and service users by means such as network groups. An openly-gay member on an organisations board or senior management team is one key criteria.

"We know that the 1.7 million gay staff in the UK workforce are increasingly keen to choose gay-friendly employers," says Stephen Frost, Stonewall's director of workplace programmes.

Staffordshire Police came out as the top gay employer, while other public sector organisations in the top 10 included the Department for Work and Pensions, joint third with Manchester City Council, and the Department for Trade and Industry coming seventh.

Ben Summerskill, Stonewall chief executive, said: "The business case for addressing these issues becomes stronger every year. Employers who overlook how they appeal to gay staff don't only miss out on a significant pool of potential recruits but, in many cases, they miss out on a significant customer base too."
