Western Park Charity Drive

Monday, March 20, 2006

Champion drivers Yasmin Khan and Georgia Hatzigiannidou, of Beta Technology, presented a cheque for £5,000 to Prof Barry Hancock at Weston Park Hospital, following their 4,000mile fund raising drive to the Gambia in the Old Banger Challenge.

Sheffield MP Meg Munn and Beta Technology managing director Richard Wrigley, who have been big supporters of the venture, accompanied the women for the presentation.

Meg said,

‘It is a fantastic achievement by Yasmin and Georgia who I know thoroughly enjoyed their journey. The money raised is going to a worth while cause and I congratulate both of them on their efforts.’

The money raised will go towards the new chemotherapy suite at Weston Park for which more than £700,000 has now been raised. “We now feel that our £1million target is attainable,” said Rachel Thorpe, of the fundraising office at the hospital.

“In this region we have 6,000 new patients diagnosed with cancer every year. During the past three or four years use of our existing chemotherapy unit has increased by 25 per cent.

“The new unit will include state-of-the art equipment which we have been able to buy thanks to the generosity of people like Yasmin and Georgia.”

“They are wonderful,” added Professor Hancock. “To drive all that way to raise funds for Weston Park is a fantastic achievement and one which we very much appreciate.”
