Education for the Future

Thursday, March 30, 2006

Meg recently visited the City Learning Centre based at Newfield School to inspect the ‘virtual learning environment’ set-up by RM Ltd. This new IT based environment is accessed by students and teachers through use of the internet.

A great deal of work has now been put onto the ‘virtual learning environment’ so that pupils can do a range of subjects on line. Meg saw a history lesson whilst there, and noted that the young people were clearly enjoying this way of working. Homework can now be done on line, with the teacher marking the work on line as well. Pupils are able to work at their own pace and get individual support from teachers.

RM Ltd set up this new way of working to improve the use of IT in schools. At the heart of the programme is an ambitious attempt to develop a workforce equipped for the 21st century by supporting new ways of learning for people aged 10-63, using the power of technology and the flexibility of the internet. Funding for the project came from a variety of sources, including from the European Union through Objective 1 South Yorkshire, with the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and Yorkshire Forward. Meg also met young people from across Sheffield who produce a magazine called Cube. She was interviewed by Grace Cook for a future print edition, it also has on line content and the interview can be heard on http://www.radiowaves.co.uk/story.asp?lngTopicID=5&lngSiteID=52&lngStoryID=5285
