‘Race for Life’ 2006

Wednesday, June 7, 2006

Sheffield MP Meg Munn officially opened this years ‘Race for Life’ at the Don Valley Stadium before taking part in the run herself. It was a hot and sunny day, which made the race hard for runners, but good for the spectators who had come out to support the event.

Meg was joined by 30 women from across the city who were running on behalf of the ‘People’s Movement’ to highlight the benefits of increasing physical activity for people’s health and well-being - as well as raising money for Cancer Research UK. The ‘People’s Movement’ provided the women with their own personal trainer along with special training sessions to help them make it over the finish line.

Before joining her fellow runners on the track, Meg officially received the Sheffield Culture and Sporting Strategy from Councillor Mike Pye, Cabinet Advisor for Culture at Sheffield City Council. The strategy focuses on inclusive sporting and cultural development in the city for the next 10 years.

Meg said: “I enjoyed the race and managed to raise £255 for a very important cause. I want to thank those who sponsored the participants for Race for Life; we raised valuable funds for Cancer Research UK. I was also very pleased to receive the new Sheffield Culture and Sports strategy. We all enjoy culture, whether sport, theatre, exhibitions or listening to live music, and I see the strategy as a step forward for social inclusion in Sheffield. ”

Councilor Mike Pye said: “Culture is for everyone, and is as rich and diverse as the people who participate. It is great that the strategy can be celebrated at many different culture and sporting events across the city such as this.”
