Post Office Card Accounts meeting

Tuesday, August 22, 2006

Following a number of constituents contacting Meg with their concerns over the Post Office Card Account she held a public meeting at St Michael’s Church in Lowedges. This was the second public meeting Meg has held on the topic with local people - unlike the first meeting, the turn-out for this meeting was limited.

Meg outlined the plans for the Post Office Card Accounts and reassured residents that when it is phased out they would still be able to access their money from the Post Office. At the present time the majority of people accessing their money from their local Post Office due so using an account with one of the building societies or banks - not the Post Office Card Account.

Meg said:

‘There has been confusion over the future of Post Office Card Accounts; made worse by the National Association of Sub-Postmasters campaign. It appears that the campaign is giving the impression that there is a national cull of Post Offices - which is simply not the case. The Post Office Card Account was introduced as a short-term measure, and was always going to be phased out in 2010. The local Post Offices currently provide an opportunity to withdraw money from over 25 different building societies and banks, and that number is going to grow.’

Meg is pictured addressing local residents.
