Warming up for winter

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

Heeley MP Meg Munn is celebrating the work of the Warm Front scheme in her constituency of Sheffield Heeley. Warm Front fights fuel poverty, installing heating and insulation in the homes of vulnerable people. To date 324 Heeley households have been helped, a total spend of £245,918.20 in the area.

Meg said:

“Many local people struggle to heat their homes, at risk to their health and this during a time of price increases. The Warm Front scheme helps vulnerable people make their homes warm - it’s a fantastic programme.”

The Eaga Group, who manage the scheme in Sheffield, have reported that 15 households in Heeley have benefited from a brand new central heating system, with a further 64 having repairs to broken or condemned boilers since June 2005. An additional 88 households will make savings from having had their home insulated.

People applying for the Warm Front scheme are offered the opportunity to undergo a check to see if they are getting all the benefits to which they are entitled. Benefit Entitlement Checks (BEC) have been operated by Warm Front since June 2003, with the average weekly increase per person in Sheffield Heeley this past year being £44.24.

To qualify, householders need to own their own home or rent from a private landlord, and they also need to be in receipt of an income or disability related benefit. Local residents can contact the Warm Front team on 0800 316 6014 to apply for a grant.
