Bringing Fishponds back to its former glory

Wednesday, October 18, 2006

Fishponds is a much loved focal point for many in Woodthorpe, after a period of neglect it is now experiencing an upturn in its fortunes. Woodthorpe Development Trust, with the help of a Big Lottery grant, is ensuring it is beginning to blossom again.

The area around Fishponds had become overgrown and disused. However, after featuring in Calendar News’s competition to win the lottery grant it has been tided up so it can be enjoyed by the local community once again. Over 2,000 tons of silt and mud have been removed, Concrete rubbish bins are now in place, picnic benches installed, trees and shrubs cut back, and litter has been taken out of the pond.

On her recent visit to see what work had been done, local MP Meg Munn said:

‘I am delighted to see that this much loved area of Woodthorpe is being brought back to its former glory. The Fishponds are not only a place which is enjoyed by local people; it is a place which forms part of the identity of the area. Having become over grown and ill treated I was pleased to see the extent of the work that has been done and I congratulate Woodthorpe Development Trust, and others, who have worked in turning the Fishponds into a much more pleasant public space.

Larry Angel MBE, Chairman of the Trust said, “The ponds are very important to local people and have become a symbol for the areas regeneration.”

Karl Barton, Woodthorpe Development Trust Manager, said, “This is an excellent example of how local people working together can bring about real and hopefully lasting change in the area”
