‘On your bike’ in Greenhill Park

Sunday, October 29, 2006

Since 2001 the ‘Friends of Greenhill Park’ have been working to establish a wheels park - and this year it opened. After securing a £50,000 grant from the Barclays Spaces for Sport scheme, £40,000 from the council, £20,000 from the landfill tax credit scheme and £10,000 from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund the Greenhill Park Wheels Park has been finished.

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn when opening the facility said:

‘I am delighted to have been asked to open this new ‘Wheel Park’ in the constituency. Local children and young people often say they want somewhere to go which is safe and caters for their interests - a number have suggested a bike and skateboard track, and I am pleased that these young people now have this excellent facility to enjoy.

‘Friends of Greenhill Park’ secretary Harry Hunter said:

"Rather than give up we persevered and now the community has got what it wants. The tennis courts hadn't been used for years and there was no demand for them to be restored. The local young people even made their own BMX track next to the courts, but we always wanted to develop some proper facilities. The park isn't very well-known. It's a hidden jewel mainly used by local people. There is every indication that the wheels park is going to add to its attraction."
