Healthy Start - a new scheme for families

Wednesday, November 29, 2006

Healthy Start, a new scheme starts today to provide eligible pregnant women, including all pregnant under-18 year olds, and children under the age of four with vouchers to spend on milk, fresh fruit and vegetables and infant formula. These new vouchers can be exchanged in any retail outlet that becomes part of the scheme - including supermarkets, milkmen, independent retailers, pharmacies, local box schemes, and market traders.

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn commented:

‘I am pleased with the introduction of this new scheme. It will help health professionals when giving information and advice to families about the importance of breastfeeding and eating healthily. It also provides better support for breastfeeding, by introducing equal benefits for both breastfeeding and bottle-feeding mothers. Overall Healthy Start is a way to improve the diet of low-income pregnant women and children and I fully support it.’

The application form for families to receive vouchers must be signed by a health professional and each Healthy Start voucher will have a face value of £2.80. All eligible pregnant women and children 1 to 3 will receive one voucher per week. Families with an infant aged 0-12 months will receive two vouchers per week.
