Ensuring Safer Body Piercing

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

Meg attended the launch of a new leaflet aimed at teenagers considering having their body pierced. This initiative is led by her constituent Christina Anderson, whose son Daniel died 4 years ago from septicaemia after having his lip pierced.

Christina set up the charity DanAid in memory of her son and to spread knowledge about the good practise to follow for those who want to pierce their body. Meg led a successful campaign to change the law so local authorities now have the power to regulate piercing outlets.

Meg said:

“I am proud that Sheffield is taking a lead on this issue, through awareness and education, and this event is a major boost to our campaign. I have worked and campaigned with Christina ever since Daniel’s death and amended the Local Government Act 2003 to give local authorities the power to regulate body piercing outlets - which Sheffield is putting into place.”

“However, the campaign continues and I am now exploring with my Ministerial colleagues possible measures such as NVQ training and further mandatory legislation which would help safeguard the public as well as improving the body piercing industry’s reputation.”
