Sheffield Decent Homes reach ‘half-way’ milestone

Wednesday, August 1, 2007

Over half of the homes in Sheffield have now reached the Decent Homes Standard and Heeley MP Meg Munn was on hand to celebrate in Arbourthorne at the home of Mr & Mrs Poulsen of Dagenham Drive.

Meg said:

“This is an important step for Sheffield and the Decent Homes project nationally. The government said it was committed to bringing all social housing in the country up to a ‘decent’ standard after decades of neglect under previous governments. I am delighted that Sheffield is taking a lead on this and congratulate Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Homes, and its partners.”

Sheffield Homes is responsible for most social housing in the city and has the largest Decent Homes programme in the country. It is organised as an Arms Length Management Organisation (ALMO) of Sheffield City Council. The government is investing nearly 700 million in local homes in the city, making improvements such as fitting new kitchens, bathrooms and central heating. Sheffield Homes has now completed work on nearly 15,500 properties, created 200 jobs and will be recruiting over 250 long-term apprentices over this a 5 year project.
