Boost for community sports in Meersbrook

Thursday, August 30, 2007

Meg Munn MP visited Meersbrook Park to celebrate the opening of the double diamond skate bowl. Thanks to 50,000 in funding from Barclays Spaces for Sports, this has transformed the area and provided a sports site for local young people and residents. A further 20,000 grant will provide coaching kit and equipment to encourage residents to take part and get the most out of the new facilities.

Meg Munn MP said:

“Not only will the project encourage people to take up sport, improving their health, it will also bring people together and strengthen community spirit. This is a fantastic facility for young people and local residents.”

The double diamond skate bowl is an open facility, providing facilities for all wheeled sports including skateboarders, rollerblades and bikers. The local community has worked with Barclays, Sheffield Council and Groundwork, Sheffield to provide the new facility.

Janette Blythe, Barclays Community Relations Manager for Yorkshire, said:

“Barclays believes that sport has a key role to play in revitalising our communities and sites like this one in Sheffield are central to this. The new site will make sport more accessible and encourage a new wave of participants to enjoy the facilities on offer.”

Nick Hedley, Groundwork Research and Development Officer said:

“Our experience shows that people really value the opportunity to have a say in improving their neighbourhoods and make them better places to live, work and play.  Getting involved in these projects gives people confidence and makes us all feel proud of where we live.”

Barclays Spaces for Sports, a partnership between Barclays, the Football Foundation and Groundwork, will create further sports sites for local communities and continues to provide kit and equipment for groups across the UK. It has opened more than 130 sites, and awarded more than 2,900 coaching packs, to local communities up and down the country, giving over 360,000 disadvantaged people the opportunity to benefit from sport.
