Meeting the new University Vice-Chancellor

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently met with Professor Keith Burnett, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield. Professor Burnett took up his post earlier this month following the retirement of Professor Bob Boucher. They discussed the role of the university in Sheffield and the region, and what can be done to encourage more young people to go into higher education. They also talked about what the university can do to work even closer with teachers and pupils in local schools and colleges.

Professor Burnett was Head of the Division of Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences at the University of Oxford. Before this he was Chairman of Physics at Oxford, where he has enjoyed a successful career of almost twenty years. He was awarded a CBE for service to Physics in 2004 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2001. With extensive involvement in science policy in Britain, he is currently Chairman of the International Science Advisory committee of the UK’s national laboratories. His research interests are in the areas of atomic, molecular and optical physics.
