Meg visits Norton Nursery

Monday, January 28, 2008

Heeley MP Meg Munn recently joined Nick Williams from the ‘Friends of Graves Park’ charity on a visit to Norton Nursery. It is located on the edge of Graves Park and is used, among others, by the successful Green Fingers project which provides therapy for adults with mental health disabilities.

The large greenhouse has recently undergone a 100,000 redevelopment and the Friends of Graves Park have secured an additional 10,000 from the Bill Oddie Wildlife Fund to develop wildlife areas. The area used to be used by Sheffield City Council to grow plants and flowers which were planted in the City Centre and right across Sheffield. However, Norton Nurseries is now being sort by St Luke’s Hospice as its new location.

Meg said of her visit and the proposals:

“I do not support the proposal to re-develop the Norton Nursery site in Graves Park for activities unconnected to the park. The land was given to the people of Sheffield to be our ‘green lungs’, and we need the area to continue to do this important work.

After the Council left the site in 1998 it fell into disrepair. But the Friends of Graves Park cleaned it up using external funding they generated to renovate much of the site back to its original purpose.

St Luke’s have an important role in Sheffield and I appreciate that they wish to expand their services. However, it remains clear to me after my recent visit to the Norton Nursery site that this is the wrong place for the development they seek.”
