Supporting Sheffield Asperger’s Group

Friday, March 14, 2008

Sheffield’s Asperger’s Children and Carers Together group (ACCT) recently met with Heeley MP Meg Munn. They currently comprise 110 registered families, and met Meg to discuss asperger’s syndrome and issues around support services. The group have developed a 4 point plan of action they wish to see happen in Sheffield:

  • a specialist Asperger’s Syndrome nurse at Ryegate,
  • social skills for children throughout their time in full-time education,
  • appropriate and trained supervision for children at lunch-time, and
  • improved training for all staff within schools.

Meg said:

“I was pleased to meet the group and talk about support services for Asperger’s Syndrome. It is a difficult condition that requires significant support. The mothers I met are campaigning for better provision for children in Sheffield, especially whilst they are at school. I give my full support to the group and look forward to working with them in the future.”

Asperger’s Syndrome is a Pervasive Developmental Disorder that falls within the autistic spectrum. It is a life-long condition, which affects about 1 in 200 people, more commonly in men than women. Those with Asperger’s Syndrome are usually of average or above intelligence. The condition is characterised by difficulties with social interaction, social communication and flexibility of thinking or imagination. In addition, there may be sensory and organisational difficulties.
