Managing Sheffield’s forest

Friday, September 19, 2008

Sheffield is said to be the greenest city in England and is proud to boast the fact. Heeley MP Meg Munn met with the new Park/Heeley Area Panel Community Forester, Ed Thatcher, to see how the trees are being managed. The abundance of trees and greenery around the city is part of ancient woodland which has supported wildlife for thousands of years. It is a vital part of Sheffield’s environment.

Ed is working on a number of projects which include a Buddhist themed garden in the Norfolk Park Bail hostel, a ‘working garden’ at Sheffield Foyer, and improving the fencing around Arbourthorne Primary School by planting shrubs and bushes. The Area Panel’s Forestry programme is about engaging with local communities, especially young people, in managing trees and greenery in their area.
