Aiming High

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

Heeley MP Meg Munn joined community leaders and others in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour at the Town Hall to recognise the work done by young people in Lowedges, Batemoor and Jordanthorpe. They took part in a new scheme, ‘Aiming High’, involving partnership between community forums, South Yorkshire Police, Sheffield and Hallamshire Football Association, Sheffield Homes and Sheffield City Council.

The scheme aimed to encourage young people and their families to design and deliver the project themselves with partnership support. Activities have involved weekly football training sessions by Sheffield Wednesday Football Club and street dancing.

Meg said:

“This is an excellent project.  Helping young people run activities themselves gives them confidence, and with confidence come the desire to reach higher goals in life and further their potential.”

Lauren Wilson, 15 from Low Edges, set up a street dance group which held its first performance at the presentation evening she said:

“It was my idea to start the group, as I love doing this kind of dancing when we do it at school, and I thought other kids would like to do it as well in their spare time.  At first, a lot of us didn’t want to dance in front of other people, but now we’ve built our confidence up, and we’re really enjoying it.  And I know having the dance crew is stopping people getting into trouble.”
