New Arbourthorne Headteacher

Monday, November 17, 2008

Heeley MP Meg Munn recently met the new Headteacher of Arbourthorne Community Primary School, Vanessa Langley. She replaces Sheila Haigh who had been at the school through some exceptional transitional years including seeing through the development of the new school building.

Vanessa was previously Deputy Headteacher at Pipworth Community Primary School. Prior to that was seconded as deputy head to support Bluestone Primary school when it was in special measures.

Vanessa said:

‘My key priorities are to raise attainment and the aspirations of our children even further. We have to ensure children are given the best possible life chances by building first class foundations in their Primary school years.

My approach is to encourage staff to be creative in their teaching and formulate a curriculum that stimulates, motivates and is based on rich first hand- experiences. We are currently reviewing the curriculum at Arbourthorne and basing the schemes on using Sheffield and its many attractions as a catalyst for each unit.

I am keen to ensure that the staff, who work in challenging circumstances, are recognised for their incredible commitment and dedication to the ’whole child’- their personal development and well-being as well as academic achievements.’

Meg added:

‘Having talked with Vanessa Langley I know Arbourthorne School will continue to go from strength to strength. I welcome her to the area and offer my full support to the school under her leadership. I wish her and all those connected with the school well for the future.’
