Support for banning order on youths

Tuesday, December 9, 2008

From the Sheffield Star 9 December 2008

By Richard Marsden

A decision to re-impose a ban on youths gathering in part of a Sheffield estate has been welcomed by MP Meg Munn. The Heeley MP and party colleague Councillor Gary Weatherall had supported Gleadless Valley residents urging Sheffield Council to put the order back in place.

The council’s new Liberal Democrat administration refused a police request to renew the ban when it expired in the summer, after concern anti-social youths were still meeting up - just moving to neighbouring areas not covered by the order.

Now the Section 30 Dispersal Order has partially been restored temporarily for the Christmas period, covering the Gaunt and Ironside areas, Hemsworth.

Mrs Munn said:

"South Yorkshire Police put in a request for this Section 30 order, something which I fully supported. The council has at long last granted this police request. Having the order will help the police move groups and individuals away from specified areas."

But Councillor Weatherall added:

"It’s a shame that the ban will only last for the Christmas period and does not cover the whole estate like it did."
