Welcoming the Urban Rangers

Monday, February 9, 2009

Heeley MP Meg Munn handed out Achievement Awards to members of the Urban Rangers scheme at Woodseats Police station recently. This scheme was launched at the end of last year by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, working with South Yorkshire Police, Sheffield 50+ and the City Council.

The scheme involves members of the Fire Cadets Scheme aged 16 or above undergoing training so they can give out safety advice, engage with the public and use first aid. It involves them going ‘out on patrol’, as well as to community events with staff such as fire-fighters and City Centre Ambassadors.

Meg said:

“This is a great scheme for Sheffield and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and could be adopted nationally. The Rangers act as ambassadors for the fire and rescue service and police, connecting with young people who are often hard to reach.

It was a pleasure to be involved in celebrating their community work.  I wish them and the scheme every success.”
