On the beat with Community Support Officers

Monday, June 8, 2009

Since their introduction in the area in 2006 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) have proved a success with local communities. Heeley MP Meg Munn, who voted for their introduction in the 2002 Police Reform Act, recently spent some time with PCSO’s Rory Webster and Chris Field as they patrolled the Jordanthorpe estate. They discussed current issues and viewed local hotspots for anti-social behaviour.

Meg said:

PCSOs provide a visible and reassuring presence on the streets which helps to reduce the fear of crime. The main issue for many people is anti-social behavior, and their key aim is to help to tackle it.

Rory and Chris told me that young people on the estate do not have much to do and tend to hang around on the streets. They can then been viewed as a nuisance and a threat by local people. I have written to the Council to ask about their provisions for young people in the area.”
