Policing discussions

Monday, July 6, 2009

Heeley MP Meg Munn met with South Yorkshire East Sector Police chiefs recently to discuss various issues. Joining the meeting was Pim Waldeck, the Dutch Ambassador to the UK, who was shadowing Meg for the day.

At the meeting the police released statistics showing vehicle crime is now the lowest it has been in Sheffield for over 30 years once dubbed the most likely place to have your car stolen during the late 80’s and 90’s. Overall crime was down again, particularly robbery and criminal damage.

Meg said of the meeting:

‘There has been some exceptional work done over the last six months to reduce crime and the fear of crime in Sheffield. It’s clear that Safer Neighbourhood Area teams have become a vital tool in tackling anti-social behaviour at a local level; they have contributed in making our streets safer. I know the Ambassador found the meeting interesting and engaging and he praised the work done by South Yorkshire Police.’

Superintendent Hemmingway took the opportunity to discuss with the Ambassador the policing of football matches. He had visited the Netherlands a couple of years ago to look into how they police football matches, and the Ambassador was keen to hear of his findings.
