Success for SOVA

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn has been campaigning against the City Council’s decision to cut funding for SOVA (Supporting Others Through Volunteer Action). She was alerted to the funding problem when constituents Kay Hamilton and Carolyn Spray came to see Meg at one of her surgeries. Kay and Carolyn’s children are on the autism spectrum and go to a SOVA youth club on a weekly basis. The club is specifically designed to ensure that children like Kay’s and Carolyn’s can enjoy a range of activities and are not socially excluded because of their condition.

Meg arranged a meeting with Councillor Andrew Sanger, Council Cabinet Member for Children Services, to discuss funding levels of SOVA.  At the meeting the Council decided to assist SOVA and will review its funding levels. They also said they would look at the work done by SOVA to see if it could be extended to other parts of the city.

Meg said:

‘It was an extremely positive meeting. SOVA is an important organisation which has given a new lease of life to my constituent’s children. I am pleased that the City Council will look again at SOVA’s funding, and in greater detail at the useful work they do.’
