Meg the Lollipop Lady

Monday, September 28, 2009

Heeley MP Meg Munn recently spent time as a crossing patrol warden outside Norton Free, a primary school in Heeley constituency.

Meg said

“My short time as a crossing patrol warden reminded me how important the wardens are. They do a very good job for the community and are appreciated by children and parents alike.

It was a good opportunity to talk with parents about what is important to them, and find out how they think things can be improved. The parents I spoke to feel strongly that there should be a pelican crossing on Hemsworth Road, as it can be dangerous to cross. I will write to the council highlighting these issues.”

Meg also spoke with Shirley Adams, School Crossing Supervisor. Shirley highlighted the issues that the School Crossing Patrol Service faces with recruitment.

Shirley said

“Recruitment is a national problem, and one that we feel needs to be addressed in the local area. Across Sheffield there are 140 sites, and there are currently over 40 vacancies. It is a role that can appeal to a wide range of people. We currently employ 21 men, the youngest warden we have is 23 years old, whilst the oldest is 74. It is a position that can be challenging, but also highly rewarding.”
