Heeley Advice Centre important to the community

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

Meg Munn MP recently had a meeting with the hard working staff at Heeley Advice Centre to discuss the important work they do within the community. Among the issues discussed was a looming financial problem that may affect their ability to continue.

At the moment the centre receives funding from the Legal Services Commission which pays the wages of advice workers, administration staff and a receptionist. The current system is being changed, with the eligibly criteria meaning that it will be essential to provide debt, housing and welfare benefit advice in order to receive this support. Due to these changes, this funding will no longer be available to the centre by October next year.

The staff also pointed out that they do not receive a fair amount from the local authority in comparison to other advice centres across the city. They currently are active in a large area of the city as well as Heeley district, having outreach sessions at Gleadless Valley Community Forum, Gleadless Valley TARA and St Elizabeth Close Community Rooms.

Meg said:

“The work that the centre does is vital for the local community. The suggested changes by the Legal Services Commission raise the possibility that this could stop.

As the centre serves both Heeley and Gleadless Valley they should receive more assistance from the council to continue to provide this support.

I will write to the council, as well as the Legal Services Commission to try and secure more funding for Heeley Advice Centre.”
