Interviewed for ‘Dan Aid’ DVD

Monday, December 21, 2009

Meg Munn MP was recently interviewed for a DVD which will be included in the ‘Dan Aid’ resource pack. In the interview she spoke about her involvement in securing better regulation for the body piercing industry, and what more is needed to be done.

The ‘Dan Aid’ group works to raise awareness amongst young people and adults of the possible health risks and dangers of body piercing. It was set up following the tragic death of Daniel Hindle in 2002. His death, of heart failure, followed complications after contracting septicaemia brought about by having a lip pierced.

The ‘Dan Aid’ pack will be aimed at primary and secondary schools as a stand alone resource that teachers will be able to use in their lessons. The contents of the pack should stimulate discussion amongst young people on a range of topics, and looks at the ‘Dan Aid’ campaign; its success to date and its aim to improve regulation for body piercing beyond the current level.

Meg said:

“I became involved with the Dan Aid campaign in 2003 following Daniel’s death and have been campaigning for stricter regulation of body piercing ever since.

I was happy to be included in the DVD, and hope that it will help educate young people when they are considering having a piercing.”

Meg successfully lobbied for the amending of the Local Government Act to allow local authorities to regulate body piercing outlets within their jurisdiction. As a direct result Sheffield’s local authority was one of the first to adopt the by-law.
