Veolia -‘your waste provides your energy’

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn went green today when she visited the city’s energy recycling plant. She called at Veolia Energy Recovery Facility to see the work they are doing on converting waste into energy.

Located on Bernard road, the centre generates electricity for the National Grid and heat for the city’s energy network from the waste that Sheffield residents put in their black wheeled bins. Servicing over 220,000 households with rubbish collection, Veolia send only 14% of the 160,000 tonnes they collect to landfill.

Meg was given a tour of the facility and saw the process of energy recovery through its many intricate stages. The tour was then followed by a presentation on aspects of the contract Veolia has with Sheffield Council.

Meg said:

“It was fascinating to see the work of the Energy Recovery Facility first hand. It is a fantastic and vital system as it diverts rubbish away from landfill and reduces greenhouse gas emissions and avoids the need to burn fossil fuels to create energy.

“Veolia are proud of the successes they have achieved so far in Sheffield, and are looking forward to the future as their contract continues with the council and more measures are brought in to help families recycle with greater ease.”
