Thanking the Women of Steel

Friday, March 19, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn joined the Minister for Veterans, Kevan Jones, at a local event dedicated to Sheffield’s ‘Women of Steel’. When the men of the city were called to arms in the Second World War it fell to the women of Sheffield to keep the steel mills running.

The event was packed with over 100 ‘Women of Steel’ and their family members to receive personal thanks for their efforts during the war. The event was also an opportunity for these veterans to share interesting, funny and touching stories about their experiences of life in the steel factories.

Meg met constituent Mary Curbishley, now aged 84, who worked at Laycocks and inspected the exhaust manifolds on Spitfires during the war years. Mary was delighted that such an event had been organised to celebrate the work of the ‘Women of Steel’ all those years ago.

Meg said:

“It was fantastic to see so many Women of Steel here today. Their work was so valuable during the war years, and I am delighted they are receiving the recognition they deserve.

“The Women of Steel were ordinary people, doing something extraordinary, and the war would not have been won without them.”

The visit follows a trip by four of the women to the capital earlier on in the year where they had tea with Gordon Brown at number 10 and met their local MPs after lunch in the restaurant in the House of Parliament.
