Watching the stars of the future

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently visited Graves Tennis Centre to see some of the matches played in the Sheffield Junior Open Tennis Tournament. She met Tennis Manager and Tournament Director Martin Folger, who told her about the history and structure of the tournament.

Meg watched a number of great matches, the contestants playing in age ranges, from 10 and under to 18 and under. This is the sixth year the event has been held at Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre, and has proved to be a hugely popular and successful tournament.

Meg said:

“I know the Graves centre well. I was one of the first to take a swim in the pool and learnt to play tennis on these courts. It’s a real pleasure to come along today to see so many young people taking part in a sport I love.

Martin is doing a fantastic job running the tournament. I understand he is hoping to get over 90 games played in one day, which I imagine is a real challenge.

It was Martin’s father, Charles Folger, who first came up with the idea of a Sheffield Junior Open Tennis tournament back in 1973. His vision became a reality in 1975 and ran for six years before the tournament left the tennis calendar. In 2005 the event was reborn and is now enjoyed by young people from as far away as Canada!”
