Heeley’s Historical Heritage

Friday, October 29, 2010

Meg Munn MP recently went on a tour of the constituency with Trevor Mitchell, Regional Director at English Heritage, to hear from the nation’s heritage experts what gems lie in Heeley. They visited a number of sites, including Beauchief Abbey and Bishops House, all of which have significant historical meaning and importance in the Sheffield area.

Beauchief Abbey dates back to 1176 and still is a functioning place of worship. Bishops House has been a source of concern to many local people and Meg organised a public meeting last year to generate support for the protection and preservation of this 15th Century building. Meg is delighted at the recent news that the Friends of Bishops House have been awarded a grant of almost 2,000 to spend on an archaeological and historical survey.

Meg said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed my tour of historical Heeley. There are a number of fantastic historical sites that we really should appreciate and make the most of.

English Heritage do a great job at championing and protecting our nation’s historic places. They also advise the government on how best to help today’s generation get the best out of our nation’s heritage.

I know that English Heritage are concerned with the cuts they are facing to their funding, but I do hope they will be able continue their great work across the country.”
