Think about road safety, or face the consequences

Thursday, December 16, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently visited a Year 5 class in Meersbrook Bank Primary School to answer questions they had about road safety. They had written to Meg telling her about the amount of traffic on Chesterfield Road and asking her to try and help reduce the quantity of cars.

During Meg’s visit she answered questions the class had for her. Their most important point was to reduce the speed limit in residential areas, especially around schools, to 20mph.  This is an idea that does help to reduce deaths by dangerous and/or fast driving, and Meg is already involved in working to extend this scheme.

The children were very knowledgeable about ‘green’ transport methods, and aware of the danger that climate change poses. Most of the children used bikes and wanted to see an increase in bike lanes.

Meg said:

“Reducing the speed limit, especially around schools, to 20mph, would reduce the number of fatalities on the roads.  As it only takes a car travelling at 7mph to break a bone, reducing the speed limit would make the difference for the lives of many children across the country”.
