Reprieve for debt advisors at Woodseats Advice

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

The government planned to cut the Financial Inclusion Fund which would have resulted in the sacking of local debt advisors, including at Woodseats Advice Centre. Local MP Meg Munn visited them and discussed the proposal with Manager Sue Auckland and Debt Adviser Sally Wakeley to hear what this would have meant to the community.

For the past five years, the 27million a year Financial Inclusion Fund has been paying for about 500 specialists in England and Wales to give free advice. At Woodseats Advice Centre it was estimated that in the last year Rachel Clayton, the Financial Inclusion Fund Debt Caseworker processed over 3.1million of debts on behalf of 170 clients. Rachel saw 40 of these clients at outreach appointments in Lowedges.

Following Meg’s visit, and the nationwide campaign to have this decision reversed, the government announced that ‘money had been found’ to continue the funding for another year. It is still their intention to cut the fund at the end of that time.

Meg said:

“I welcome the news that the government has done a u-turn and will continue to fund the workers for a further year.

I will continue to press them to make clear its plans for the future. It unacceptable to treat dedicated workers in this way and leave those suffering financial problems without skilled support and advice.”
