Putting carers first

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

Meg Munn MP arranged a meeting with Eddie Sherwood, Director of Care and Support, and Josie Bennett, Head of Learning Disabilities, at Sheffield City Council concerning changes to services for adults with learning disabilities. Meg had recently met carers who were very worried about cuts to services and reduced budgets, and she wanted to highlight difficulties some families were experiencing when being reassessed as part of the changes.

Josie explained that a new system has been introduced to better enable families to meet the needs of a person with a disability, including greater flexibility when choosing services. The new system recognises that carers and the person who is disabled are best placed to decide what services they require, and that a family paying direct to a service provider meant they could get better value for money.

The meeting was valuable in highlighting some problems that have arisen for families in the new system. Josie was keen to emphasise that her team keep in touch with service users and families through schemes such as the Caring Sharing Project to listen to any concerns people may have.

Meg said:

“This was a productive meeting. It helped identify problems that are occurring during the change to this new system of providing services. I am pleased that Sheffield Adult Services have committed to following up the concerns raised. I will be keeping in touch with the carers and visiting some of the services in the coming months.”
