Rafting at the Oakes

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

Local MP Meg Munn recently visited the Oakes Holiday Centre, situated in 90 acres of stunning scenery in Norton, to learn more about what happens at the renovated Georgian house. She met the Director of the centre, Dan Thaw, who explained that the residential centre opened on 1st July 2000 with extensive facilities including rope swings, rafting, pool tables, crazy golf, basketball and a lot more.

As well as organising camps for Christian groups, the Oakes Centre provides camps for schools. They have a great record of return attendees, with many young people returning year on year, with a number volunteering to help out at the camps when they are too old to attend. The camps are for 8-18 year olds and the building can provide over night facilities for around 60 children.

The Oakes Trust, a registered charity, purchased the property in May 1998 and embarked on an extensive programme of renovation. This was funded by donations and carried out almost entirely by volunteers. There are open days providing an opportunity for people to see and hear about the work at the Oakes Holiday Centre. To find out more about what goes on, visit the website on: http://www.oakes.org.uk/
