Richmond practice and patients

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

Local MP Meg Munn recently visited Richmond Medical Centre to meet GPs and practise managers to discuss a range of issues affecting the centre and its patients. The main topics included the proposed GP led consortia, the Health Bill and work force planning, as well as the new facility at the centre, their mini surgical suite.

The Medical Centre received funding for the building of the new mini surgical suite, but unfortunately has yet to receive any funds for its actual ongoing use. This is hugely disappointing for the GPs and their patients, who have all experienced frustrations whilst the building work was taking place but are yet to gain the benefits of the up-to-date facility.

Some concerns were raised about funding and how money will be spread across the different health facilities in the city. Richmond is in an area where traditionally the age of residents will be higher than elsewhere, and so will weigh heavier on local medical services. The GPs and managers hoped future funding would reflect this.

The discussions also included some of the positive changes that have happened over the last few years such as improved waiting times, greater choice and GPs taking on more procedures from hospitals. The consensus was that now was not the time for change.

Meg said:

“It is important to meet people who are on the front line of the services provided by the NHS to find out what their views are on the services available, and potential changes to them.

The people at the meeting introduced a number of interesting issues which I plan to raise with the PCT at our next meeting.”
