Recycle Bikes!

Friday, June 24, 2011

As part of Green Bike Week local MP Meg Munn visited Heeley Development Trust to see their Recycle Bikes project. The independent, not for profit project specialises in recycle bike sales, service and repairs, youth and adult training, ride programmes and much more. At the facility on Thirwell Road, she met Manager Paul and team members Carlos and Ash who took her on a tour.

Paul explained how they work with the Recycle Bicycle Aid for Africa Project, whose mission is to collect second-hand bicycles and ship them to Africa. The bikes that may not pass the rigorous test here, but are still in working order, are sent over to Africa, and the project in Heeley donated 138 bikes last year.

Meg said:

“As Green Bike week focused on fixing bikes this year I thought there was no better place to visit than the Recycle Bikes Project at Heeley Development Trust. It’s fantastic to see that every possible part of the bike is recycled, and is either resold here or sent to Africa.

Paul and I discussed the difficulties he is facing in recycling the tyres of the bikes that are no longer suitable to use, and we will be working together to see if there is anything we can do to help.”
