Watching the allotment with Catch-22

Thursday, July 21, 2011

As a follow up to her visit earlier in the year Meg Munn MP went to the city centre offices of Catch-22 and then visited their flourishing allotment site. Catch-22 is a local charity working with young people and others who find themselves in seemingly impossible situations.

Meg met Senior Servicer Manager Julie Otter, and sat in on service user ‘Have Your Say’ forum where a number of issues were discussed, including recent feedback from questionnaires. The surveys had been completed by a number of service users and highlighted the organisations strengths, such as commitment from staff and excellent support systems.

After the meeting Meg and Julie, accompanied by volunteer Les, headed to the allotment site that they have been looking after for just over a year. When the group first took on the site it was very over grown, but now the site looks fantastic, and is producing a wide variety of vegetables. Local company Henry Boot kindly donated a potting shed for the allotment, which came in extremely handy on the wet and windy day!

Meg said:

“As someone who knows how enjoyable gardening can be, I am so pleased that Catch-22 has helped young people and volunteers have the opportunity to experience the pleasure of growing, and eating, organic vegetables.

The staff, supporters and service users are making the most of their patch, and the activity seems to be helping the young people develop their self esteem, build self confidence, as well as gain new skills and get some healthy food.”
