Out and about with our local police

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

Local MP Meg Munn recently accompanied PC David Struggles on a tour of areas of Gleadless Valley, Batesmoor and Jordanthorpe, focusing on locations that have previously suffered from crime and anti-social behaviour. Included was a visit to Heeley and District Allotments to inspect the new fence installed to combat anti-social behaviour there.

She heard from David, who is stationed at Woodseats Police Station, about the current situation about crime and significant issues in the local area. Overall there has been a decrease in reported crime, with a notable 40% reduction in burglary, a 30% reduction in drug possession and an overwhelming 50% reduction in robbery since April 2010. The local Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are highly visible and they provide reassurance and a listening ear for the public. Working with local partners such as Housing Offices also helps when tackling issues of anti-social behaviour, creating trust and confidence in the community.

The proposed police budget cuts will have an effect on resources, particularly a reduction in staffing. PC Struggles did however assure Meg that the team will continue to act as efficiently as possible, maintaining the positive approach that has so far seen great results in levels of crime in the area.

Meg commented:

“Previously people had given up their allotments because of the persistent problem of vandalism. Now that the new fence is in place the land is much more secure and I hope this will encourage people to take up the available allotment spaces.”
