Meeting the Minister

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Following new government proposals to raise ‘floor targets’ in primary schools local MP Meg Munn arranged a meeting at the Department for Education with Schools Minister Nick Gibb MP. She took Arbourthorne Primary school Headteacher Vanessa Langley and Chair of Governors Caroline Beattie with her. The meeting was to discuss the potentially damaging situation that Arbourthorne would face under the new proposals.

The school has been making considerable progress over the last 8 years and since the new Headteacher arrived in 2008 school results and targets have shot up reflecting the effectiveness of the new leadership. It also has a fantastic Integrated Resource Unit (IRU) which enables children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and disabilities to experience mainstream school. However the new proposals would mean that the SATS attainment figures from these children would be included in the school’s overall achievement figures. This would push Arbourthorne below the new ‘floor targets’ and would mask the tremendous progress that the children are making.

Meg commented:

“The staff at Arbourthorne school want to make sure that the children’s hard work is recognised and that the government doesn’t force new unwanted changes into the school based on raw data alone. This would de-motivate the teachers, children and parents, affecting the community as a whole.”
