Concerns at Sheffield Centre for Independent Living

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

Recently Meg Munn MP met volunteers and representatives from the Sheffield Centre for Independent Living (SCIL) to learn more about their work. Janet, Lee, Brian and Jacquie explained that SCIL are a membership and user led organisation which is run and controlled by disabled people to promote independent living in Sheffield.

Meg heard that many of the changes being brought in by the government were worrying people, including the changes from DLA to personal independent payments. The centre had also been contacted from parents caring for disabled children they were concerned that where two parents were providing full-time care they were receiving very little support.

SCIL also explained that they were concerned over changes to Legal Aid, which had impacted on the local advocacy service.

Meg said:

“The Centre for Independent Living is doing a great job in supporting disabled people and making sure their voices are heard.

There are many different issues that disabled people and support organisations are struggling with at the moment and I will raise specific local concerns with the government following my meeting with SCIL. It is important that government recognise the real impact that some of the changes they are bringing in are having on people’s lives.

Uncertainty and changes to funding of voluntary and community organisations also mean it can be difficult for organisations like SCIL to compete with larger organisations and national charities.”
