Local Methodists discuss Millennium Development Goals

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Mount View Methodist Church was the venue for March’s meeting of the Sheffield District Methodist Women in Britain. It was very familiar to the meeting’s speaker, Meg Munn MP. Not only is Mount View in her constituency, but she attended the church throughout her childhood and was welcomed into membership there as a teenager.

Meg’s speech focused on the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals, which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015. She outlined how few of these goals are now on track to reach the 2015 goal. The role of women in developing countries was highlighted as being particularly important to improving development.

Questions were also asked about her role as an MP and the impact that her faith has had on her work. The meeting was mainly attended by women, but the few men who came along were made to feel welcome.

The Sheffield District are focusing on the Millennium Development Goals throughout the year and are supporting a group of Dalit women in India.  Pamela Grayson, Chair of the local Methodist Women in Britain group, presented information about the group and a collection raised 118.

Meg said:

“It was a real pleasure to be back at my old church on International Women’s Day. I commend the work being done by Methodist women around the country to support women working to improve their lives in developing countries.”
