Supporting local fair trading

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

As a long time member of the co-operative movement local MP Meg Munn was delighted that the Co-operative food stores pioneered the concept of trading fairly – leading the way in stocking goods with the Fairtrade label.  During the recent Fairtrade Fortnight she called into the Woodseats Café for a delicious Fairtrade hot chocolate to illustrate that many Fairtrade goods are now available in a variety of retail establishments.

The Fairtrade Foundation is promoting the ‘Take a Step in 2012’ campaign to persuade consumers and businesses to buy more Fairtrade products. The Fairtrade mission is to establish fairer trading practices to benefit the millions in the developing world who are dependent on farming for a living.

Current trading practices mean that many farmers can’t earn enough from the sale of their crops to cover costs let alone support their families. Fairtrade offers farmers and workers fairer wages, safer working conditions and funding for projects that benefit the wider community.

Meg said:

“I have long supported fairer trading standards and good working conditions. As a co-operative member I am proud that Co-op shops were the first major retailer to sell Fairtrade products, and the Co-operative Bank was the first bank to introduce an Ethical Policy.

Our local Woodseats Café is playing its part in the global effort to support more ethical consumer products and retailing. I hope many more businesses will follow their lead and introduce Fairtrade products onto their shelves.”
