BioBlitz helps record local wildlife

Friday, May 25, 2012

Local MP Meg Munn joined volunteers to help record some of the thousands of species that live in and around Gulleys Wood Meadow, near Beauchief Hall. She took part in the ‘BioBlitz’ event organised by Beauchief Environment Group and Sorby Natural History Society as part of Sheffield Environment Weeks.

The groups helped volunteers to explore the disused nursery and local woodlands and to record the different species that they found. Volunteers from the local groups had a busy day as they also held a moth recording event in the evening.

Meg said:

“Taking part in the BioBlitz event was a great start to the day!

I really enjoyed learning more about our local wildlife and helping volunteers to record what animals and plants are living on this site. I was amazed that they expected to find up to a thousand species during the day and I hope they managed to track them all down!”

Beauchief Environment Group and Sorby Natural History Society look after the wildlife habitats at Gulleys Wood Meadow and help record the species that live on the site. Sheffield Environment Weeks is run by a committee of volunteers with support from Sheffield City Council.
