The White Horse of Heeley

Monday, June 11, 2012

Local MP Meg Munn recently met local volunteers at Heeley Millennium Park whilst they were painting the well known white horse on the side of the grassy hill, in preparation for the upcoming Heeley Festival on Saturday 23rd June.

With the help of Heeley Development Trust, volunteers work hard to maintain Heeley Millennium Park and its eye catching white horse, which is 7.9 meters high and 13 meters wide! This community anchor organisation is led by and employs local people with the aim of making Heeley a successful, vibrant and inclusive community.

The session is the first of a series of monthly work days planned for the rest of the year to encourage local people and provide opportunities to learn new skills alongside the parks team.

Meg said:

“The White Horse of Heeley, which has been a part of the Millennium Park since 2001, is a fantastic sight and an example of how volunteers in the community can come together and get involved in something really worthwhile.”

The Heeley Festival will be on Saturday 23rd June from 12 5pm.

The theme will be the Olympics and there will be an Olympics themed parade at 11.45am to kick things off. To prepare flags, banners and masks for the parade, Heeley Development Trust will be holding 2 art workshops in the park on Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th June at 12 3pm, for local children and their families.
