Raising awareness of Meningitis locally

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Local MP Meg Munn recently met Heeley constituent Martin Humphries who has been working hard to raise awareness of the Meningitis Education Support Campaign.

Every year 1,500 children fall victim to bacterial meningitis and around 40% of survivors will be left with after-effects from the disease. Sometimes, these can be hidden issues resulting in problems at school.

Martin, along with many other supporters, believes that those who are fortunate enough to survive meningitis should have access to the appropriate support in order to help them fulfil their ambitions within the school system. He has been working with the Meningitis Trust to give child victims of meningitis and their families a better future by ensuring the right support is there upon leaving hospital and throughout their life.

The Meningitis Trust petition with 14,000 signatures calling for automatic educational assessments for children who have suffered from meningitis has been handed into Downing Street.

Meg said:

“The work that people like Martin are doing with the Meningitis Trust brings about change and benefits people lives. Any child who has suffered from Meningitis should be entitled to appropriate support throughout their academic life so that any problems can be identified early.”
