Tackling the brambles

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Local MP Meg Munn, accompanied by local councillor Roy Munn, joined members of the Beauchief Environment Group for a working morning around Beauchief Abbey. The task was to cut back trees and clear the ground to make it easier to mow the grass and keep the area around the ancient monument clean and tidy.

Brambles grow in the area and their branches are particularly damaging to the remaining ancient walls of the abbey. Tools and advice were supplied by Henk Littlewood, one of the City Council’s rangers.

Beauchief Abbey was built in the 12th century and as with most monastic sites it was an industrial as well as a religious centre. Farming on the Beauchief estate and on outlying manors was important, and the monastery also controlled iron smelting, mineral extraction, woodland industries and mills on the River Sheaf.

Meg said:

"I enjoyed the time I spent with the group on a beautiful autumn morning. The work they do for the abbey and the nearby woods is invaluable. It’s also a very sociable group and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys gardening."
