From a student

Friday, December 21, 2012

Following Meg’s visit to one of the secondary schools in Heeley constituency we received the following:

On Friday 23rd November Meg Munn, the local MP for our area, came into our ethics class to talk about what she does, and we got to ask her questions about her life and her opinions.

Her family were involved in politics, so she grew up in a politics environment. She started out as a councillor in the local area. She has been in politics for 20 years, having joined the Labour party when she was 15 years old, the same age as us!  She told us that she has to work long hours from Monday to Thursday. She is in London those days, then on Friday she visits local places in Sheffield like schools and supermarkets, and is also in her surgery to meet people who have problems. She will take their issues to London to see if the government can do anything about them. She enjoys the feeling of solving problems because she feels like she has helped to serve people.

Meg Munn said she wouldn’t go into the jungle like Nadine. She feels Nadine has been silly for this decision, and because she sometimes says things too honestly, so she gets herself in trouble with the press.

As a class we then discussed with her some issues that will be coming up in our ethics lessons. She does not really believe in euthanasia, because vulnerable people may be taken advantage of. Also she does not think it is right to legalise cannabis, because she thinks people would move onto harder drugs.

All in all, it was interesting to meet a real live MP, and good of her to share her views and her lifestyle with us.
