Meg backs Sheffield ‘Patient Opinion’ scheme

Thursday, April 4, 2013

Sheffield Heeley MP, Meg Munn, has backed a scheme set up by a local GP which gives patients a chance to have their say on health services.  Patient Opinion aims to facilitate honest and meaningful conversations between patients and health services.

The scheme was set-up by a former Sheffield GP, Dr Paul Hodgkin, in 2005 and it has grown to be the UK’s leading independent non-profit feedback site for health services.  Patients can leave feedback about hospital and community care directly on the Patient Opinion website or by phone.

Once their story has been posted online, patients can see whether local health organisations have looked at their story.  Many users receive feedback after posting their comments online.  The site also shows where a change was made to a health service, following comments received, and how many people have looked at a story.

Meg said:

“Health services across the country have been changed as a result of patient’s feedback on Patient Opinion.  It was great to meet the local team, who have set up this fantastic facility for patients, and to find out more about their work.

The website also now allows MPs to monitor comments left by patients about services in their constituency, which can provide us with more information about what’s happening in the area we represent.  I’d urge all of our local health providers to work with Patient Opinion, and to listen and where appropriate act on the feedback provided.”

Founder of Patient Opinion, Dr Paul Hodgkin, said:

“We believe that your story can help make health services better.  People want to help the NHS improve and many people also want to thank NHS staff for the care they’ve received.  However, some patients want to raise concerns.  Patient Opinion looks at health services from the viewpoint of the patient, not the system, which is why it’s such a powerful force for change.”

Patient Opinion hopes to be able to offer the chance for people to leave comments about GP practices, dentists and other smaller primary healthcare services in the future.  They are working with them to find a way to allow feedback, whilst protecting the anonymity of patients who are making the comments.

You can tell Patient Opinion about your experience of using health services by visiting their website  www.patientopinion.org.uk  or by phoning 0800 122 3135
